TMJ" stands for TemporoMandibular Joint, or the jaw joint. You have two TMJs, one in front of each ear, connecting the lower jaw bone (the mandible) to the skull. The joints allow movement up and down, side to side, and forward and back鈥攁ll the mobility necessary for biting, chewing and swallowing food, for speaking and for making facial expressions.Temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders, commonly called TMJ, are a collection of poorly understood conditions characterized by pain in the jaw and surrounding tissues and limitations in jaw movements. Injury and conditions that routinely affect other joints in the body, such as Arthritis, also affect the temporomandibular joint.
Goldista is correct. I had the surgery required to correct it on the right side of my jaw many years ago. It was well worth it. Just recently, when I yawn, my jaw locks and is very painful. I have to push under my chin to pop it back into place. When I feel a yawn coming on i try to remember to stifle it.
Many visits were required to a specialist before surgery you have to try other options such as night mouth guards. I could not chew a bagel, pizza or gum. Even now, I only chew gum a few minutes before the pain kicks in and I get rid of it. No regrets after having the TMJ surgery though.
It's a disorder in your jaw when it clicks and/or locks up.I was tested for it, but didn't have it. My jaw still popsand if I'm not careful, it'll lock up, which kills. If your jaws pops, you must avoid foods like gum, jerky, tootsie rolls, or anything thats chewy and might cause you to over-chew. I had the click for a few months until one night, it popped right out of place twice in a row, and I had to go to the emergency room. The cartilidge swells up inside afterwards and you won't be able to bite down for that day. I've been to doctors, had MRI's, dentists, X-rays, and orthodontists. No one is sure what's wrong with me, but I ended up getting braces to help (also help my crooked teeth). So far nothing has happened, but I haven't got my bottom braces yet. Hopefully in 2 years the popping will go away and I'll be able to eat all the foods I used to enjoy again!
