What on earth did people do?

Before there were ways of numbing for teeth to be pulled???
Answer:
My grandma says back then they would have teeth removed with pliers. When there was pain, they would go to a guy in the neighborhood and he would remove teeth. And sometimes a guy was there just to keep ppl's mouth open. She said it didn't seem so bad back then because that's all anyone knew to do. She makes fun of us being afraid of dentists today because she didn't have the "good numbing stuff" we have today.
Lots and lots and lots and lots of WHISKEY!!
eww i dont even want to think about that.oww!
they most likely didn't have dentists back then either and their teeth rotted out
they just opened their mouth and let the barber go at the tooth with a pair of pliers. Maybe after a few shots of whiskey. How barbaric but it was this or go on suffering with a tooth ache. Aren't you glad you were born at a time where pain relief was available. When ether came on the scene you could breath in the ether vapors and be unconscious during the dental procedures.
There have always been herbs, medicines and chemicals that physicians used to treat patients for a variety of illnesses.
Alcohol and a pair of pliers was the time-honoured way of dealing with an extraction in western culture.I'm truly grateful for progress!
they drank whiskey
Teeth were just pulled and the person had to live the pain. Many times the patient would drink alcohol during or before having a tooth pulled. Novacaine (no longer in use now) was developed in the early 1900s and cocaine was also used in dentistry back then.
