What is dry socket?

Answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/dry_socket...Pretty much, it is inflammation of the space left behind where your tooth(wisdom) used to be. It can really hurt, but can be prevented if you keep food out of it.When I had mine removed, the dentist gave me a syringe with a plastic flexible like needle I could use to extract food or to blow water into the area.
when a tooth is pulled there is a hole left in the gum. if the hole does not close it is a dry socket.food and air are the biggest enemies.food gets trapped and decays causing all sorts of problems.air in a dry socket is verry painful
Dry socket happens after extractions and it can be very painful. Keep the socket clean and see your dentist who can put some medicine directly into the socket which is antiseptic and helps the healing process. Good Luck
A dry socket happens after a tooth is extracted, it is when the blood clot left behind from the extraction comes out exposing the underlying bone to the oral environments. The clot acts as a protective bandage over the healing bone. To avoid a dry socket; don't create a vacuum in your mouth ie. don't drink through a straw or smoke, these could cause the clot to come loose. Also avoid anything with alcohol, such as Scope/listerine b/c these will dry the clot out. Talk to your DDS about it, but I'm very confident that if you follow what I've told you, you will not have to experience a "Dry Socket".
